Organic Rankine Cycles (ORC) are systems that can effectively recover low-grade heat for electric power generation. For ORC to be a viable technology, it should operate safely and efficiently under variable operating conditions due to exogenous and operating specifications changes.

Reheating is a method of improving Rankine cycle efficiency which consists of inter-stage heating of the expanding steam. After the first stage of expansion which typically reduces initial steam pressure by one-fourth, the steam is heated up (or close) to the maximum heat source temperature.

The ORC turbogenerator uses medium-to-high-temperature thermal oil to preheat and vaporize a suitable organic working fluid in the evaporator (4>5). The organic fluid vapor rotates the turbine (5>6), which is directly coupled to the electric generator, resulting in clean, reliable electric power.

ORCs operate on low temperatures and low pressures with comparative to conventional Rankine Cycles. Therefore, organic fluids or refrigerants can be used as the working fluids for ORC applications, instead of water, which is more suitable for high-pressure and high-temperature applications.
