The working principle of the organic Rankine cycle is the same as that of the Rankine cycle: the working fluid is pumped to a boiler where it is evaporated, passed through an expansion device (turbine, screw, scroll, or other expander), and then through a condenser heat exchanger where it is finally re-condensed.

An organic Rankine cycle (ORC), is fundamentally the same as a steam Rankine cycle; however, it uses a lower boiling point organic fluid to better match its operation to lower temperature heat sources. ORC systems can achieve better efficiencies than steam turbines for smaller systems (less than a few MW_e).

In our case study, the expected generated electric power is 1,750 kW or equivalently, 15,000,000 kWh of electrical energy annually. Financial analysis shows that the ORC system, including the cost of the unit plus the costs of installation and integration into the process, will cost approximately 4.8 Million USD.

A basic ORC consists of four main components: an evaporator, an expander, a condenser, and a pump. Figure 1 shows the simplest ORC configuration. As can be seen, liquid in saturated conditions (1) is pumped, increasing its pressure, into the evaporator (2) where it is evaporated by supplying energy in the form of heat.
