The Rankine cycle is an idealized thermodynamic cycle of a heat engine that converts heat into mechanical work while undergoing phase change. The thermal efficiency equals 1 minus the ratio of the low-to-high pressures to the power of 1 minus the reciprocal of the heat capacity ratio.

The choice of the organic fluids was based on previous reports [4, [62] [63][64], where the best efficiencies for the organic Rankine cycles operated in similar conditions to those of the present study were obtained with benzene, toluene, and cyclohexane.

The efficiency of current high temperature Organic Rankine Cycles does not exceed 24%. Typical steam Rankine cycles show a thermal efficiency higher than 30%, but with a more complex cycle design (in terms of number of components or size).

The Rankine cycle operates in the following steps: 1-2-3 Isobaric Heat Transfer. High pressure liquid enters the boiler from the feed pump (1) and is heated to the saturation temperature (2). Further addition of energy causes evaporation of the liquid until it is fully converted to saturated steam (3).
